Pre-Civil War items consist chiefly of bills, receipts, and promissory notes of John Green, many re settlement of estate of George Green, of Fauquier County, Va.; other items document purchases of slaves; John Green's role as a founding member of the Southern Rights Association of Greenville District (ca. Nov. 1850); settlement of estates of John Green (d. 1852) and Mary Green (d. 1855); and William B. Green's work as a farmer. Civil War letters evidence William B. Green's Confederate military service along the South Carolina coast, chiefly at Pocotaligo and Sullivan's Island. Muster roll for Green's reserve troops (2 Sept. 1862) lists men's names and ages. After two years in the army, Green hired a substitute for twelve months service (Feb. 1863). Subsequent letters detail his regiment's relocation to Wilmington and Kinston, N.C., and Petersburg, Va.; participation in the defense of Petersburg; life in the trenches and health problems; and wounding and hospitalization at Woods Hospital and Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Va. War correspondence ends 6 Dec. 1864. Green continued to farm after the war. Other items of interest include list of deceased white and African-American members of Brushy Creek Baptist Church (15 Mar. 1863); Green's voter registration (4 July 1892) and commission as a poll watcher (Oct. 1892); and undated ambrotype of Green in Confederate uniform.
